Which baby diaper should you stock?

Diaper pants are the most popular choice for babies who crawl and walk, usually from about 5 or 6 months. They pull on like underwear. Tape diapers open flat and fasten at the sides, which makes them easiest for young babies and for night-time. Newborn diapers are small and extra soft, with a cut-out at the front for the umbilical cord.

Most shops and distributors keep both pants and tape. Pants sell most in M, L and XL. Tape sells most in NB, S and M.

Rewet (dryness)How dry the surface stays when pressed after wetting, so skin stays dry.
LeakageWhether liquid escapes at the legs or back when the baby moves.
Speed of soakingHow fast the diaper pulls in a sudden gush, so it does not run off.
Tape & waist strengthTapes stay fastened and waistbands stretch without tearing.
Skin safetyMaterials are checked to be gentle, with a skin-friendly pH and no harsh smell.

1Top sheetSoft non-woven fabric that touches the skin. Lets wetness pass straight through so the surface stays dry and gentle.
2Quick-spread layer (ADL)A thin layer just under the top sheet. Spreads liquid out fast so it does not pool in one spot or leak.
3Absorbent coreFluff pulp mixed with super-absorbent polymer (SAP). SAP turns liquid into gel and holds it, even when the baby sits or sleeps on it.
4Core wrapTissue that wraps the core. Keeps the core in shape so it does not lump or break up when wet.
5Breathable back sheetCloth-like outer cover with tiny pores. Stops leaks but lets air through, which helps prevent rashes.
6Leg cuffs & waistbandStretchy elastic at the legs and waist. Seals the edges for a snug fit without red marks.
