Signs of Preterm Labour and What to Do
Labour that starts before 37 weeks of pregnancy is called preterm labour. India has one of the highest numbers of preterm births in the world, so knowing the signs matters.
Warning signs
- Regular contractions or tightening, four or more an hour
- Low, dull backache that comes and goes
- Pelvic pressure, as if the baby is pushing down
- Period-like cramps, with or without diarrhoea
- A change in vaginal discharge: watery, mucus-like or bloody
- Fluid leaking or gushing from the vagina
If you notice any of these before 37 weeks, contact your doctor or go to hospital straight away. Treatment can sometimes delay birth or prepare the baby鈥檚 lungs.
Who is at higher risk?
Risk is higher with a previous preterm birth, twins or more, high blood pressure, infections, a short cervix, very young or older maternal age, and smoking. But preterm labour can happen to anyone.
If your baby arrives early
Many preterm babies spend time in a NICU or special newborn care unit. They need diapers sized by weight, often under 2 kg, with a cut-out for the umbilical cord. Read our guide on caring for a premature baby at home.
