How to Start a Baby Diaper Business in India
Baby diapers sell every week in every town, so they are one of the steadiest products in baby care. There are three common ways to start.
Option 1: Become a distributor
You buy an existing brand in bulk and sell it to shops in your area. It needs the least money to start and no design work. See Cushies distributorship.
Option 2: Launch your own private label brand
A manufacturer makes the diapers and packs them with your brand name. You control the price and build your own brand. You need money for the first production order (usually 50,000 pieces per SKU) and the pack design. See private label baby diapers.
Option 3: Build a factory
A diaper machine, building, raw material stock and staff need a very large investment, and the machine must run full time to pay back. Most new brands start with private label first.
Steps to your first order
- Choose your format: pants are the biggest seller for babies over 6 months.
- Pick 2 or 3 sizes to start, usually M, L and XL.
- Get samples from 2 or 3 manufacturers and compare softness, absorbency and leaks.
- Decide your selling price and work back to the pack count.
- Finalise your pack design and place the first order.
Legal basics
You need a GST registration, and your pack must show the size, count, batch number, manufacturing date, MRP and the name and address of the manufacturer and marketer. Your manufacturer can guide you on the pack details.
