Planning a Pregnancy: Your Preconception Checklist
The healthiest pregnancies often start before conception. Many of a baby鈥檚 organs begin forming before you even know you are pregnant, so the three months before trying matter.
1. Start folic acid now
Folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Doctors commonly advise starting a daily supplement at least one month before trying and continuing through the first trimester. Ask your doctor about the right dose for you.
2. Book a preconception check-up
- Review any long-term conditions such as thyroid problems, diabetes or high blood pressure
- Check your medicines are safe for pregnancy
- Blood tests for haemoglobin, blood group and immunity to rubella
- Catch up on any vaccines you need
3. Eat well and move often
A balanced diet with dal, leafy greens, fruit, whole grains, dairy and protein builds up iron and nutrient stores. Regular moderate exercise helps you reach a healthy weight, which supports fertility.
4. Cut out harmful habits
Stop smoking and alcohol, limit caffeine, and avoid recreational drugs. Partners should do the same, because sperm health matters too.
