NICU Diaper Procurement Guide for Hospitals

What hospital purchase teams and NICU nurses should check when selecting a premature baby diaper supplier, from size range to documentation.

Choosing a NICU diaper is a clinical decision as much as a purchasing one. This checklist helps purchase committees and nursing heads compare suppliers on the things that matter on the ward.

1. Size range by weight

Does the supplier have a true micro-preemie size (under 1 kg) as well as 1–2 kg and 2–3 kg sizes? Many brands start at 2 kg.

2. Design for the NICU

  • Umbilical cut-out that clears the cord and lines
  • Narrow crotch that does not force the hips apart
  • Gentle, repositionable fasteners
  • Wetness indicator
  • Consistent dry weight for output measurement

3. Supply reliability

Ask about monthly scheduling, buffer stock and lead time to your city. A stock-out of the smallest size has a direct clinical impact.

4. Documentation

Request a specification sheet (materials, dimensions, absorbency, pack details), batch traceability and any certificates your committee requires.

5. Trial

Run a two-week ward trial with nurse feedback on fit, leaks, skin condition and ease of changing in an incubator.
